5 Best Things To Do In Region VIII: Eastern Visayas

As all of us may know, Eastern Visayas has plenty of undiscovered paradise. Here are some of the best things to do when you visit this wonderful region. Enjoy! :-)

1. Scuba Diving at Higatangan Island

In Higatangan Island, Naval is where you would find serenity. This is located at the Biliran province, one of the six provinces of the region. The white beach is definitely breathtaking! Scuba diving is one of the awesome things to do here since the water is so clear and there are only few of developments yet. As we can observe, tourists tend to ruin a tourist destination because of irresponsibility of one's own trash. This destination has only few tourists that's why you would surely enjoy the quiet time and the nature of the area.

Moving sand bar extending around 200 meters to the sea. One huge coral rock - a reef that was thrust up from the ocean's floor centuries ago. The fields are full of gigantic clam shells. The island has several white sand beaches with exotic shells newly washed up from the seabed. Facing an open sea, the white sand beach, cool pristine waters and exotic rock formations of Higatangan Island is itself nature at its best.

Here are some of the photos of Higatangan Island:

It felt like it was impossible to resist the urge of snorkeling on this side of the island. The waters is crystal-clear and maze of corals indicated the abundance of marine life. It is said that reef sharks were lurking in the vicinity but the scuba diving will not be in that area. The sharks were just small and they probably were no bigger than three feet.

HOW TO GET THERE?

The fastest way to get to Higatangan Island is by 45 mins boat ride from Naval to Mabini or Libertad port. Fare: PHP 45 for students while PHP 50 is the regular fare.

2. Cave Adventure at Sohoton Cave

Sohoton Cave is located at Basey in the province of Samar. Fascinating geological features abound in 840-hectare park such as caves, limestone boulders, rockholes, weathered formation rocks and underground rivers. This cave is part of the Sohoton National Park. It is one of its main attractions. The entrance of the cave is parabolic-arc-shaped and with the height of 50 meters. The cathedral-like entrance of the cave is definitely attracting! The view from the outside is phenomenal.

The word Sohoton came from the Waray-Waray word "sohot" which means bend over or pass through. Sohoton is a place where are are plenty of caves that people need to bend over just to pass through.

Here are some photos of the cave:

Spiky shaped and other shape of stalactite will be observed in its ceiling and wall. From the cave, you can see a natural swimming pool where most of the tourists loved to swim and do the binge eating after.

HOW TO GET THERE?

Basey is about 45 minutes by car from Tacloban passing through the famed San Juanico bridge. Tours start at the Basey pier where a pump boat, tour guide, and light men are rented. It is another 45-minute ride by pump boat up a winding river passing through small villages, nipa palms on the banks an a
motley parade of river crafts.

3. Daring Activities at Agas Agas Adventure Park

Agas Agas Adventure Park is found in Sogod, Southern Leyte. It is where daring activities are found! As said by Mr. Potpot Pinili, ziplining over the Agas-Agas bridge brings to life the metaphor, "hanging by the thread." It is like flying without wings. The speed is about 160 kph on an 880-meter suspended cable and flying about 377 ft from the ground. The incline of the zipline is really solid. Most ziplines travel on a straight line but this one has an incline that is overly steep. One will also experience crossing the bridge with buses and trucks passing by you as you fly without wings over them. Thrill seekers will surely enjoy this!

The Agas Agas bridge is also an attraction in this adventure park. It is now the tallest bridge in the country at 292 ft. above sea level. It spans about 350 linear meters and serves an important connection between Visayas and those traveling to Mindanao via Liloan.
