About 49 eruptions have been documented since its first blast in 1616. Worst eruption occurred was on February 1, 1814 wherein about 12,000 people evacuated in Cagsawa and sought refuge inside the church but lost their lives as the town was flooded with lava and also destroyed the church. Things You Don't Know About Region 8: Eastern Visayas

Leyte played an important role in history

During the second world war, Leyte witnessed the dramatic return of General MacArthur to fulfill his promise to save the struggling Filipinos from the handa of the Japanese invaders. On the 22nd of October year 1944, the shore of Leyte witnessed his corps historic landing.

The region is indeed an unknown paradise in the archipelago

The Philippines is known for Boracay, Palawan, Batangas, and other beautiful attractions but what people do not know, there are a lot more breathtaking sceneries around the Philippines. There are many who are not aware that the Philippines has far more beautiful beaches other than the famous ones. An island filled with natural beauty nomally attracts investors on tourism but Samar and Leyte moved far from the list of te most visited provinces. Sighrs of potential development were planned but the lack of facilities, technical access and discouraging rumors of rebellion prevented these from happening.

Adventure travelers with experiences on remote explorations bravely moved in to the almost inaccessible interiors particularly of Samar. Negative turned out beneficial for keeping its hidden beauty feom being unreasonably exploited. At least they are still able to keep their culture and heritage.

Surfing in this region is perfect

The massive winds of the Pacific make surfing a worthwhile activity in rugged coastlines. However, due to the rumors of military activity and poor transportation, the travelers were discouraged particularly surfers from exploring more of its surfing sites.

Ferdinand Magellan's Landing

Homonhon Island in Sanar is the site of Ferdinand Magellan's first landing in the archipelago.

Fun-filled Festivals

The region is home of the Pintados and Sangyaw festivals. On the month of June each year, Pintados and Sangyaw festivals are held in the region's capital, Tacloban City. These festivals are the region's biggest crowd drawing events coinciding with the religious festivities of Tacloban City honoring Señor Sto. Niño, rhe Patron Saint of Tacloban.

Shop 'til you drop in Region 5!

Every time I see the word "shopping" I automatically feel giddy and happy, so much that my wallpaper says "Keep Calm and Go Shopping" so I know I'll have a good time writing this post! :)

Whenever I go on a trip to a tourist destination, I make sure I leave with souvenirs with me. At least I have a concrete memorabilia from the place, not just pictures. Also, as a tourism major, I know how badly the locals need money from the tourists (hello, multiplier effect!)

 Sili Key chain

When you hear the word "Bicol" you will most likely associate it with "Bicol Express", right? Or is it just me? Haha. Anyway, since Bicol is the land of the spicy (Yup, totally made that up!) they embraced their label and lived up to it even on souvenirs. If Baguio has the famous Barrel Man, Bicolanos have their Sili Key chains!

What traveler hasn't heard of this puppy-eyed statement from friends, neighbors, relatives or even acquaintances?

And yet you do it.

For friendship! For love!
Onward, brave human! Bring home memories of ARMM!
